 Imagine
a fair, light-eyed 12-year old dressed in a red overall and red cap running around
a garage trying to get into grips with the intricacies of repairing and modulating
cars! Yes that was how Shiraz Ginwalla would spend all his vacations from that
tender age. He literally ate, drank and dreamt cars, cars and more cars. By the
time he had finished school he knew more about cars than most of the boys his
age. It
was round that time when a kindly gentleman introduced Shiraz to the world of
vintage car rallies! It was a dream too good to be true. Shiraz always had the
encouragement of Vinod Nayar and Arun who very graciously lent him his Beetle.
And, lo and behold! Shiraz, Perzan, Eric, and Ashrafi - all cousins were set for
the rally- the youngest team to participate! That was the first and decisive step
into the world of vintages. The first rally was crazy-full of every conceivable
mistake but they finished the rally! But in their third Haig Vintage Rally they
won the Best Performance Award. The youngest team had arrived! Neville
Choksey, an avid collector of rare bikes took a fancy to Shiraz. He egged him
on to explore his capabilities in bike repairs and restoration work along with
a well-known restorer, Mehmoodbhai. A very close bond developed between the three
and today Shiraz and Mehmoodbhai are working together on restoration of vintage
bikes under the name of 'DREAMS RESTORATION'. Every day, Shiraz visits the garage
after work (he is employed with ITC Hotel) or scout for the spares which are difficult
to find. It
is no mean task to have restored and won the Best Restored and Best Maintained
bikes awards for many rare bikes like BSA plunger ZV-31; Royal Enfield 700CC twin
- Meteor; BSA A-7; Ariel Red Hunter; Indian Chief, Triumph Tiger-100, Norton Dominator,
amongst many others. A very rare straight four cylinder bike 'Henderson' of 1924,
is the latest addition to the maintained bike list. Their efforts were rewarded
when this bike, besides being the greatest crowd-puller in the recently held 'Haig
Vintage Rally 2008', also captured the Best Performance Award and the Best Maintained
Bike Award for bikes built between 1920 and 1940. The
road is long and the journey exciting. Here's wishing them many more awards to
add to their long list. |
