Love Your Fruits, Nuts And Dry Fruits

Jamshedi Navroze is the festival of spring harvest and traditionally Irani-Zoroastrians lay out a spread of fresh fruits and vegetables and dry fruits along with other goodies like sweets and meats. It would be a prudent guest who will help herself or himself to the selection of dry fruits, nuts and fruits of course, and feel no guilt. And below are the reasons why.

We have heard it a million times - However, not many of us know exactly why this fact is emphasized in all health books. The following ideas might just stimulate your appetite for fruits:

  • For the largest part fruit consists of water just like the human body does.
  • Fruit stimulates the memory
  • Fibers
  • Fruits are anti-depressants
  • Fruits contain natural sugar which is essential for the body.
  • Fruit is 100% bad-cholesterol free.
  • Fruit is the most natural food.

NUTS

  • They are natural good quality fat.

  • They are fiber dense.
  • They are power house of vitamins and minerals.

APPLES

ORANGES

It's an excellent source of vitamin C, which helps to make collagen, which is essential for healthy skin. It contains thiamin, folate and pectin which help to lower the blood cholesterol levels. It acts as an antioxidant, prevents free- radical damage and therefore helps inhibit certain cancers.

PAPAYA

It is very rich in vitamins A, B and C. The juice of the papaya contains papain an enzyme similar to pepsin produced by the human digestive system to break down the proteins. The papaya not only for food, but also for healing wounds, for supporting a weak liver, for healing constipation, against worms and parasites, for healing inflammation and skin problems and even for treating cancer. PINEAPPLE

Juice of the unripe fruit causes uterine contractions and should not be given to a pregnant woman. Juice of the ripe fruit cures gastric irritability in fever and is very helpful in jaundice. RAISINS

Raisins are dehydrated grapes that are heat dried or used in mechanical oven for drying.

Antioxidants: Raisins are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect our bodies against free radical damage.

Energy: Many parents give their children raisins before sports games. That is because raisins contain many B vitamins known for boasting energy. I personally eat raisins for this very reason.

Fiber: Raisins are a good source of fiber, which is important for your body to stay regular.

Healthy teeth: Don't let the sticky and sweetness of the raisin fool you. Raisins do not cause cavities and gum disease, and rather promote oral health because of the oleanolic acid found within them. This acid is very effective in killing the bacteria that cause cavities and periodontal dental disease.

Eyesight: Raisins are also a preventative measure for Macular Degeneration, which is the health of your eyesight.

Bone Health: Raisins contain Calcium which in known for causing bone health. Eating enough calcium will also help protect against osteoporosis.

PRUNES

California remains one of the largest producers and exporters of prunes. California prunes, sun ripened and juicy plums are considered to be the best in the world and the state is the international leader in prune production.

Prunes are simply sun ripened dried plums. However, though all prunes are plums, all plums are not prunes. How do prunes help your body?

  • Help in weight management, being delicious and energy giving foods at the same time containing no fat, cholesterol and also adding lots of fiber.
