Women, particularly at forty plus, become conscious of the fact that the mirror seems to reflect the fading away of youthful looks. Those who have looked after their - skin, hair and health through regular use of beauty products, beauty treatments, a balanced diet, regular exercise and a sensible life-style may still look ten years younger than they really are. But a large number will have to think of anti-ageing strategies. Apart from wrinkle-free creams, treatments, hair colouring, the right kind of make-up, the forty-plus category need to be well informed on the process of ageing so that they know how to keep fit and look fabulous till they reach the sixties and beyond.
Dr. Geeta Pandya, a gynec-endrocrinologist has tips for staying fit and looking good after forty. According to her, the first step is knowing how the ageing process sets in. This information will keep you ahead of the problems so that you may deal with them effectively. One of the causes is the decreasing level of feminine hormone "estrogen". This makes the skin lose its elasticity, moisture and firmness, which results in wrinkles. This hormone not only gives a woman feminity but also protects her heart and bones. When the estrogen level goes low women get "hot flushes". The low levels of estrogen influence the production of "neuro-transmitters" which carry messages to and fro from the brain. When this gets affected, the blood vessels gets dilated. This makes the thermostat system of the body go out of synchronisation and cause hot flushes. She advises women to keep a record of the flushes and see if a pattern emerges. This information will help the gynecologists in treating you.
Another related problem is heavy periods. To combat this, one is advised iron-rich foods, Alcoholic drinks of any kind, as well as exercises must be avoided till the
period continues.
Some women get into depression due to the hormonal changes. It is necessary to seek professional help from a clinical psychologist. Deep breathing exercises, yoga and meditation have proved to be helpful.
Since estrogen also protects bones, low levels of estrogen make the bone brittle. Intakes of calcium-rich foods are recommended. If neglected, osteoporosis (thinning of the bone) may set in. With low levels of estrogen some women tend to put on weight. Go on a low-fat, high-fibre diet and keep exercising regularly. The heavier you are the older you will look. Being over-weight predisposes you to age-related diseases like high-blood pressure, diabetes, ·arthritis, heart attacks etc. The ailments and medication will affect the texture of your skin, your hair and your looks.
For all the above problems of low-level estrogen, "Hormone Replacement Therapy" (HRT) is available in most leading hospital. Of course HRT has to be done under medical supervision. Many of the leading hospitals have setup "Menopause Clinics" to help women overcome these problems.
Forty-plus women are also advised yearly check ups like mamography, pelvic sonography and estrogen level along with blood tests and lipid profiles. Research shows that for those well informed and for those who go for annual check ups religiously, there is no greater wealth than health. In conclusion, I would like to add that health and beauty are two sides of the same coin.
